The pinMode() function/method sets the mode for the provided pin number to either and INPUT or OUTPUT.

Black Box Input

The pin number is provided, along with the pin mode of either INPUT or OUTPUT.

Black Box Output

If possible, the mode of the given pin is set to either INPUT or OUTPUT. Nothing is returned.

The Atmel AVR8Bit core uses look-up tables to translate the input pin to a port number and a port bit value.
